“Got those hamburger patties ready, Maddox?” Eli asks coming in from the patio.

“Right here,” Cain replies, handing him the platter. “Where is our guest of honor?”

“He just texted Britt, he’s five minutes away.”

I can tell Eli is uptight…again.

I’m making a tossed salad, and as I chop the carrots, I glance over at Eli. “I really think this is a good thing, babe,” I say. “Just try not to embarrass your daughter by going all alpha on Dalton’s ass, okay?”

Eli gives me a playful smack on the ass. “How would I do that?”

“Don’t interrogate him like some Nazi commander,” Cain pipes up. “Show some cool.”

“Oh, like you?” Eli says with a smirk. “I like how you’ve been coaching Brittany this week on how to get on my good side.”

“I didn’t know you had one, babe,” Cain deadpans.

I interject. “Listen, I want both of you to behave this evening. I think Brittany showed a lot of maturity by wanting us to meet Dalton. She is nearly fifteen, so let’s remember what it felt like at that age. I realize that’s a lot farther back for you two than it is for me--but try, please?”

“Why you little shit,” Cain says, with a huge grin on his face, picking me up and tossing me over his shoulder. “I should spank your ass for that comment.”

I’m squealing as his hand smacks my backside playfully, and trying to wriggle out of his arms when I hear the back door slam. We all turn to see Brittany staring at us and the look on her face says it all.

“Seriously? And I’m the one who lacks maturity?”

Cain sets me down, and gives her a wink. “We were just playing, Britt. We promise to behave when your company gets here. Scout’s honor,” he finishes, holding up three fingers.

“Relax, sweetheart,” Eli says soothingly. “Everything will be fine.”

Just then the doorbell rings.

“I’ve got it,” she says, making a quick exit out of the kitchen.

“Showtime,” I say. “Remember what I said, guys.”
